Team Trash Track’s Tech for Good Journey

Team Trash Track, a group of seven passionate students from across Brazil, captured international attention with their outstanding achievements in the 2023 Tech for Good competition. Rising to second place globally and securing the People’s Choice Award, this ambitious team impressed audiences and judges alike with their innovative solution to Brazil’s waste management challenges. Their journey showcases the power of technology-driven approaches in creating impactful, sustainable solutions.

The Vision Behind Team Trash Track

Formed by a diverse group of Brazilian students, Trash Track’s mission is clear: to address critical waste management challenges in Brazil using advanced technology. Though geographically scattered, their unity and determination to make a difference emerged through virtual meetings during Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program in 2022. Their first in-person interaction took place virtually through a tour of China, solidifying a collaborative bond that has driven their success.

The team includes Anna Julia, a 22-year-old electrical engineering student specializing in cybersecurity and augmented reality (AR); Gabriel, a computer engineering enthusiast focused on tech innovations; and Stefany, a fellow computer engineering student with a passion for photography. Together, they shared a deep-seated frustration with the inefficiencies in Brazil’s waste management system, leading them to create a tech-driven solution to address the issue.

The Tech for Good Journey

Stefany recounted how Trash Track’s journey began with Seeds for the Future, where they were introduced to cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, AI, and digital power. This experience sparked the idea for Trash Track, a solution aimed at revolutionizing waste management in Brazil. Through PIM’s Tech for Good program, the team gained mentorship and training, enabling them to refine their concept and ultimately rise as one of the top 10 global finalists.

Every team member played a crucial role, with responsibilities ranging from technical simulations and sensor management to design and pitch preparation. Gabriel’s insights on technology and Stefany’s project management skills were pivotal in crafting a comprehensive and impactful solution.

Addressing Key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Trash Track’s project addresses two core Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). According to Anna, effective waste management is essential to improve public health and urban sustainability, aligning Trash Track’s mission with the broader vision of creating smart, sustainable cities.

Overcoming Post-Competition Challenges and Future Plans

Since their success in the competition, Trash Track has focused on scaling their solution and implementing it locally. Anna highlighted challenges such as securing funding and navigating Brazil’s regulatory landscape, while Gabriel discussed their efforts to obtain government funding and build local partnerships. Despite obstacles like bureaucratic delays, the team remains committed, continuously improving their project and seeking financial support to bring it to fruition.

The Role of Mentorship and Program Support

A key element of Trash Track’s success has been the guidance from their mentor, Salma Nukta, whose expertise helped them fine-tune both technical and presentation aspects of their project. PIM’s Tech for Good program also provided essential resources, including intensive workshops, coaching sessions, and problem-solving exercises. Though balancing these commitments with their academic and personal lives was challenging, Anna described the experience as life-changing.

Advice for Future Tech for Good Participants

In closing, Danton asked the team to offer advice to future Tech for Good participants. Stefany emphasized the value of collaboration, while Gabriel encouraged persistence and openness to feedback. Anna advised participants to start early and stay organized. Their final message was one of resilience: success in the Tech for Good program requires teamwork, dedication, and a genuine passion for addressing real-world challenges.
