Start with the Why: Defining Your Social Enterprise’s Mission

On 15 January, PIM kickstarted Launch for Good: Masterclass for Social Entrepreneurs with the first workshop of the series! Led by Hawa Kombian, the session delved into a series of questions that many social entrepreneurs face: How do I find my vision and mission? How do I ensure that they align with both my values and with market needs?

The participants not only had a thought-provoking session from Hawa on how to craft a vision, mission and values, they also put their learning into practice during the breakout discussion. The session ended with an enthusiastic Q&A and inspiring shareback session as participants shared the vision and mission they had for their potential ventures.

These were the key takeaways from the session:

  1. Vision is the long-term aspiration that defines what you believe the communities you serve deserve to experience; it should reflect the legacy you want to leave behind. A good vision should be aspirational, inclusive and timeless.
  2. Mission refers to the medium term goals for your enterprise. A good mission should help the enterprise build up credibility, thus it is important that one aligns the available resources with measurable goals to ensure feasibility.
  3. Values determine the day-to-day decisions and behaviours of the leader and the enterprise. Enterprise values – be it inclusion, innovation, accountability, respect, commitment, or others – should underpin the mission.

After learning how to craft your vision and mission, the next workshop in the Launch for Good series will provide critical tools to transform vision into actionable strategies through a strong business model. Registrations have opened here – do not miss this session!
